A license allows you to create one new original song using the beat. You can write and record vocals, add your own musical elements, adjust the arrangement, tempo or pitch, and commercially release the finished song within the terms of your license.

What's the difference between a Non-Exclusive and Exclusive License?

Accepted Answer

Non-Exclusive means the same beat may be licensed to multiple artists. It includes commercial release rights with certain limits on streams, sales, video usage and other exploitation. Exclusive means no new licenses for that beat will be granted after your purchase. You receive unlimited commercial usage rights for your song. Any valid Non-Exclusive Licenses issued before an Exclusive License is purchased remain valid under their original terms. Exclusive Licenses are available for select tracks by agreement.

Can I release my song commercially?

Yes. Both Non-Exclusive and Exclusive Licenses allow you to commercially release your finished song through platforms such as Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube Music and other music services. Your beat must be incorporated into a new song. You may not redistribute or release the original beat by itself.

Do I own my finished song?

You may own and control the master recording of the new song you create, subject to the terms of your license. Casper retains ownership of the original beat and 50% of the underlying musical composition.

How does the 50/50 songwriting split work?

Accepted Answer

Casper retains 50% ownership of the underlying composition because the musical composition of the beat forms part of your finished song. The remaining 50% belongs to you and/or the songwriters on your side. If multiple writers collaborate on your vocals or topline, they divide your 50% between themselves. Casper's 50% is not reduced unless otherwise agreed in writing.

Do I need to pay additional royalties?

There is no additional master royalty payable to Casper under the standard Non-Exclusive or Exclusive License unless otherwise agreed. You keep the income generated by your master recording. Casper retains his 50% interest in the underlying composition, including the applicable publishing, performance and mechanical royalties. These rights are generally administered and collected through the relevant music rights organizations rather than requiring you to manually account for master revenue.

How should I register the song with my PRO or collection society?

If you register the song with a performing rights organization or collection society, Casper must be registered as a co-writer with a 50% ownership interest in the composition. If you're unsure how to register the split correctly, get in touch before submitting the registration.

Question 8

What files do I receive?

Accepted Answer

Standard delivery is a high-quality stereo WAV file. Stems or trackouts may be available separately for certain tracks. If included or purchased, they allow greater flexibility when arranging and mixing your song.

Question 9

What are stems / trackouts?

Accepted Answer

Stems are separate audio files containing the individual instruments or groups of instruments that make up the beat. They give you or your mixing engineer greater control over the arrangement and final mix.

Can I change the beat?

Accepted Answer

Yes. You may make reasonable changes to the arrangement, length, tempo or pitch to fit your song. If you need more substantial production changes or want to develop the track further together, get in touch.

Question 11

Can I use Content ID?

Accepted Answer

With a Non-Exclusive License, no. The same beat may legally be used by other artists, so registering your song with Content ID or another automated copyright-claiming system could incorrectly claim their music. With an Exclusive License, Content ID may be used subject to the terms of the license and any Non-Exclusive Licenses granted before your purchase.

Question 12

Can I use the song in film, TV, advertising or games?

Not automatically. Commercial third-party synchronization uses such as film, television, advertising, branded content and video games require separate written approval. Get in touch if you have a sync opportunity involving one of the tracks.

Question 13

What happens if someone buys an Exclusive License after I bought a Non-Exclusive License?

Accepted Answer

Your existing license remains valid. You can continue commercially exploiting your song for the remaining term and within the usage limits of your original Non-Exclusive License. The Exclusive License simply prevents new licenses for that beat from being issued going forward.

What happens if my song exceeds the limits of my Non-Exclusive License?

Accepted Answer

Get in touch before exceeding the applicable limit. Depending on the track and situation, your license can potentially be renewed, upgraded or replaced with another agreement.

Can I buy an Exclusive License?

Accepted Answer

Exclusive Licenses are available for select tracks by agreement. Availability and pricing depend on the track, its licensing history and the intended use.

Question 16

Can I send the beat or stems to my engineer or collaborators?

Accepted Answer

Yes. You may share the files with people directly involved in creating your song, such as vocalists, songwriters, musicians, recording engineers, mixing engineers and mastering engineers. They may only use the files in connection with your licensed song.
